Gun Battery Cap Ferret

To protect the entry to the Arcachon bay, the German Army built a gun battery at Cap Ferret. The battery consisted of four 105 mm. guns placed in R671 bunkers and an R636a command and control bunker for target acquisition and fire control. Also, R607 ammunition bunkers were build for the guns. Several R621, R622 and R502 crew bunkers were constructed.

On the beach at Belisaire, 2 km. north of the battery, an air defense position was built with bunkers for the guns and an R637 observation bunker.

The area is very vulnerable to beach erosion and most of the bunkers are currently located on the beach or in the water.

Europe's largest Sand dune, Dune de Pilat is located on the other side of the bay, about 2 km. to the southwest. This attraction is visited by about 1 million tourists annually.
