Stützpunktgruppe Blaavand

At Denmark's westernmost point Blåvandshuk the Germans started in the summer of 1941 construction of a gun battery.

In the beginning, the four 105 mm. guns was placed in open positions and the crew quartered in barracks. In late 1942 construction of bunkers began, gun bunkers (R671), fire management (R636) and to the crew. There was also built bunkers for storage of ammunition, as well as air defense and close combat. There were, in addition to the gun battery in Blaavand, listed a total of 11 batteries of 105 mm. guns in Denmark. These were all constructed nearly identical. The guns were from 1913, conquered in France and had a range of 12 kilometers.

The German Air Force (Luftwaffe) began in the summer of 1942 the construction of a radar station northeast of the gun battery. Stützpunkt Büffel had besides a strong anti-aircraft defenses, a large command bunker (L487) on two floors. A big mammut radar 30 x 10 meter mounted on a bunker (L485) to monitor the waters to the west of Allied airplanes. The range was 300 km. which was over half way to England.

From the autumn of 1943 began the German navy to build a radar station southeast of the gun battery.

Besides other bunkers a radar bunker (RV174) was built with a Wurzburg radar mounted on the top. This type of radar could track ships at distances up to 80 km.

Luftwaffe position is today part of military training area, while most other bunkers are scattered around the dunes.
