Prora Beach Resort
In 1936 began the German "Kraft durch Freude" organization construction of a large holiday resort on the island of Rügen in the Baltic Sea. It was planned that around 20,000 workers from the German industrial cities should use Prosa and the wide sandy beaches as a holiday destination.
A total of eight identical six-storey hotel blocks were built, extending over 4500 meters of coastline. It was expected that 10000 apartments would be built, all with sea view, with access to a cinema and a theatre.
For three years construction continued on "the colossus of Rügen" until the outbreak of World War II put a stop to the works and the 9000 construction workers were sent to more important tasks.
Today on the site there is a visitor centre, from which tours are conducted of the otherwise empty building complex.
