Operation Overlord

Operation Overlord was the keyword for the Allied assault on Europe's mainland at Normandy in June 1944.

It was and still is, the worlds biggest military operation involving around. 3,000,000 soldiers from primarily America, England, Canada and France

The invasion was launched  early in the morning on 6th June, with the deployment of troops by parachute and gliders. In the months beforehand, the entire northern France had been subjected to massive aerial bombardment, mainly against defenses and infrastructure. By sunrise the allied warships began shelling and the landing of troops on the coast. The Germans had in years prior reinforced the entire coast from northern Norway to southern France with their so-called Atlantic wall. It consisting of a chain of reinforced strongholds and coastal artillery. The invasion was divided into five landing beaches: Sword, Juno, Gold, Omaha and Utah, and despite the massive bombardment before the landing, there were intense German resistance. The fight on the beaches waved back and forth, but by evening on 6th June, the allied soldiers had managed to conquer a small bridgeheads on all beaches. The Germans were far from beaten and in the weeks that followed, the fight continued on every one meter as the Allies advanced. Two months lasted the battle in Normandy and finally, in late August, it led to the liberation of Paris.
